Biography

Dr. Kenneth L. Reed joined the UNLV School of Dental Medicine in the spring of 2023 to help develop and serve as director of the advanced education certificate program in dental anesthesiology.

After earning his bachelor’s from the University of Arizona, Dr. Reed earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) School of Dentistry in Portland, Oregon. After graduation, Dr. Reed remained at OHSU where he completed advanced training in anesthesia as well as a residency in periodontology. Later, he finished a CODA-approved dental anesthesia residency at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Dr. Reed practiced periodontics in Tucson, AZ, for more than a decade while also providing anesthesia services to his patients and patients of other dentists in Arizona. He retired from periodontics in 2001 after 10 years in private practice to pursue providing anesthesia full-time.

Dr. Reed is also an affiliate assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology at OHSU. He was with Lutheran Medical Center and then New York University for over 24 years, culminating in serving as the associate program director of the dental anesthesiology residency before retiring from that position.

Dr. Reed is a past president of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, is a Diplomate of and board president for the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology, and is a board member of the American Institute of Parliamentarians.

Other distinguishing accomplishments during his career include providing more than 10,000 hours of continuing education for anesthesia-related topics, authoring more than two dozen peer-reviewed journal articles, and writing seven chapters for the textbooks “Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management,” and “Behavior Management in Dentistry for Children.” He also co-authored “Anesthetic Adversity: Failed Sedation in Anesthesia Complications in the Dental Office.”

Outside of being a faculty member, Dr. Reed is a flight instructor, instrument flight instructor, multi-engine instructor, and advanced ground instructor. This is in addition to holding an airline transport pilot certificate. Finally, Dr. Reed is a Certified Parliamentarian-Teacher through the American Institute of Parliamentarians and a Professional Registered Parliamentarian through the National Association of Parliamentarians.
