Biography
Kaitlin Clinnin is an associate professor of English. She earned her master's degree in english from Virginia Tech and her doctoral degree in rhetoric, composition, and literacy studies from The Ohio State University. She researches how writing instructors and writing program administrators can create effective learning environments for students given changing social and educational contexts. Clinnin’s most recent research focuses on trauma-informed pedagogy in writing programs and classrooms. Her current grant-funded research examines K-12 teachers’ exposure to trauma as a contributing factor to teacher career dissatisfaction and retention concerns. Her work has been published in several edited collections, most recently in Understanding WPA Readiness and Renewal, and journals such as Communications in Information Literacy, Composition Studies, Computers & Composition, and WPA: Writing Program Administration.
Clinnin is an award-winning teacher and mentor who teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on writing pedagogy, antiracist and inclusive pedagogies, academic writing, and research methods. She directs the first-year writing program, which enrolls over 8,000 students each year in general education writing courses. In this role, Clinnin oversees the pedagogical training of new graduate teaching assistants, offers ongoing professional development on current pedagogical trends for graduate and part-time instructors, designs the curriculum for in-person, hybrid, and web-based courses, and assesses the effectiveness of these courses.
