Ayan Sengupta, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Biography
Ayan Sengupta joined the Department of Health Physics and Diagnostic Sciences during fall 2024 and teaches Comprehensive Medical Imaging including MRI Physics, Radiation Science and Dosimetry courses within the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Sengupta earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from India and his master’s degree in computer science majoring in medical image processing from the University of Nebraska. He was awarded a prestigious DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) Research Scholarship for obtaining his Ph.D. in neuroimaging from Otto-von-Guericke University, Germany. He performed his postdoctoral research in the University of Cambridge and the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre in the United Kingdom. He is a Lifetime Honorary Affiliate of the Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge and worked as a Research Fellow of Royal Holloway, University of London.
Sengupta’s research is centered on neuroimaging, specifically on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). He is particularly interested in ultra-high field 7T human fMRI and the application of machine learning, AI and other computational modelling in understanding how the visual and tactile information are represented in different parts of the brain. At UNLV, he is currently setting up his research program focusing on accessible low-field MRI systems for primary care and investigating the use of novel Imaging and AI techniques for dementia biomarkers.
