December 6 Memorial Art Projects
The December 6 Memorial Committee invited artists from within the UNLV community to create murals for the six pillars at the entrance to Frank and Estella Beam Hall. The intention is to reframe the experience of walking into the building and support healing while honoring the memories of the professors lost. In the days after the Dec. 6 shooting, a small group of Naoko Takemaru's students were also compelled to come together to show appreciation for her. Senbazuru is a Japanese tradition of folding 1,000 origami cranes, usually over the course of one year, as a symbol of solidarity, honor, home, and healing.
Rebel Recovery Program
President Whitfield, in collaboration with university leaders, has created the campuswide Rebel Recovery Program. The safety, security, and well-being of the UNLV family – our employees and students – is our priority. Rebel Recovery will encompass special events, wellness services, training opportunities, security and safety issues, and more.
Mental Health Reimbursement Program
The President and Provost’s offices, Business Affairs, and Human Resources are pleased to offer reimbursements to employees who have paid for counseling or other mental health services as a result of the December 6 tragedy.
The program will cover payments made from Dec. 7, 2023 – Jan. 1, 2025, or until funds are exhausted.
Gratitude, Encouragement, and Appreciation
Since the Dec. 6 tragedy, the Rebel community has experienced kindness, support, and encouragement from so many. We would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for all those who have helped and inspired us as we continue our recovery process.

How You Can Help
There has been an outpouring of support and care from our Southern Nevada community and Rebels around the world since the tragic December 6 shooting that took the lives of members of our Rebel Family and impacted us all. Funds to consider for donations:
- The UNLV Emergency Support Fund was established by the UNLV Foundation. This fund will be used to help the campus recovery, including counseling services for our students, faculty, staff, and first responders.
- Memorial scholarship funds in the names of Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Patricia Navarro-Velez, and Naoko Takemaru were established by the Lee Business School and the College of Liberal Arts. These support UNLV student scholarships.
- The Resiliency & Justice Center, in conjunction with the UNLV Foundation, has set up a fund to accept donations for families of victims who died in the incident and to help those who suffered severe physical injuries. A donation link is on the VSRC’s website at https://resiliencyandjustice.org/unlv/.
