Webinar: Leveraging Funds of Knowledge in Engineering Education with Joel Alejandro Mejia April 18

Join the HSI Resource Hub on Friday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for their April webinar: Leveraging Funds of Knowledge in Engineering Education with Joel Alejandro Mejia.

Engineering education has traditionally focused on approaches that often overlook the diverse cultural, linguistic, and experiential knowledge students bring to the classroom. Funds of Knowledge (FoK) in engineering education challenge traditional deficit-based perspectives by recognizing the rich cultural, experiential, and linguistic knowledge that students bring to their learning environments. This approach reframes engineering education to be more attuned to the interest of students by providing a responsive education to students.

This webinar will explore FoK in higher education, particularly in engineering, as an asset-based approach to student learning and engagement. Participants will explore the motivations for integrating FoK in engineering education, discuss methods for assessing asset-based approaches, and examine challenges and opportunities in implementation. Specific topics include examples of FoK-based approaches in higher education, the role of bilingualism as a critical resource for engineering, and ways to embed FoK into engineering curricula.

This event is free to attend, please register in advance to receive the Zoom webinar information
