The UNLV Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences invites participants for a research study that will examine the effectiveness of three techniques to reduce the negative feelings associated with a past fearful memory. The primary investigator is Dr. Gregory Brown.
Purpose of the Study: We plan to assess the effectiveness of Advanced Integrative Therapy [AIT] compared with the effectiveness of a known energy psychology based intervention, Emotional Freedom Technique [EFT], popularly known as “tapping,” and an additional well established intervention called Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing [EMDR]. The focus is upon a specific single memory that you identify, to assess the subjective changes in that memory trace, in terms of emotional intensity, associated somatic sensation, and physiological assessment of brain activity as measured by QEEG, and a questionnaire.
Participant Criteria:
[1] You are an adult at least 18 years of age.
[2] You are able to read and understand English in order to complete forms.
[3] You do not suffer from any kind of diagnosed epilepsy.
[4] You do not have complex PTSD or a severe form of PTSD.
[5] You do not have a history of intense reactions to specific triggers or memories.
Benefits of Participation: Due to activation of the relaxation response during any of these interventions, it is anticipated that negative emotional tone related to the chosen memory will be substantially reduced.
Cost/Compensation: There will not be a financial cost to you to participate in this study, other than transportation to the Department of Psychiatry address. The first experimental session will take approximately one hour of face to face time. The followup session, six months later, should take less than 15 minutes face to face time. You will not be compensated for your time.
Confidentiality: All information gathered in this study will be kept as confidential as possible. No reference will be made in written or oral materials that could link you to this study. Electronic files will be stored in a secure data system per UNLV policy for five years. After the storage time, the information gathered will be destroyed.
