New Ways to Install Software, Enhanced Security Coming to IT-Managed Computers

New self-service tools that let you install software yourself without having to contact the IT Help Desk and local computer encryption that better protects your data against unauthorized access will be installed on IT-managed computers starting July 1.

New Software Center and Support Hub

Starting July 1, IT-managed computers will be automatically upgraded with either Software Center (Windows) or UNLV Self Service (Mac). While these tools have slightly different names, the function is the same.

  • Click-to-install software you need, including Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Office 2021, FortiClient VPN, and Zoom

  • New Make Me Admin app for temporary admin privileges to add printers and install software not available in the new self-service tools

  • Quick access to important device information, such as operating system, to expedite support from the IT Help Desk
  • Shortcuts to find knowledge base articles, existing support tickets, or to submit new help requests

Encryption

If not already set up, hard drive encryption will be turned on and your user permissions will be changed to a standard user to protect against unauthorized data access. You can use Make Me Admin for temporary admin privileges when you need to make changes to your computer.

What You Can Expect

  • IT-managed computers: Your computer's performance may be affected during the installation. You can allow the changes or delay them for a more convenient time.
  • Computers not managed by IT: If you'd like the self-service tools and encryption set up on your computer, please contact the IT Help Desk.

These new services are a part of UNLV Information Technology's ongoing efforts to enhance security and improve customer support. For more information, visit the UNLV IT Support Hub and Computer Admin Access & Encryption initiatives sites.

If you have any questions or need assistance using the new tools, please contact the IT Help Desk.
