Dear Colleagues,
I’m writing to follow up on the recent messages from President Whitfield and NSHE leadership.
First, I want to thank President Whitfield for his dedicated and passionate leadership of our university during the past 4+ years. He was a role model of an engaged president who wished the best for everyone at UNLV and worked tirelessly to advance our university. I know I speak for all of us in wishing him great success in the next chapter of his journey.
We often say that the only thing constant in life is change. As we enter our next chapter, I step into the role of Officer in Charge with a profound sense of responsibility and respect for this institution and the people who make it great. While the Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Regents determine the next steps for our university’s leadership, I am committed to ensuring continuity and stability during this transition. UNLV is a special place, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help guide us forward.
UNLV has long been shaped by the contributions of the people who call it home. Since 1992, I have had the privilege of working alongside many talented individuals—faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters—who make this university exceptional. I am eager to continue collaborating with all of you as we move forward.
Although we are in a period of transition, our momentum will not slow. The Nevada Legislative Session is underway, and we will strongly advocate for UNLV and promote the critical role we play in shaping the future of our state. Our commitment to students, research, and community engagement remains steadfast, and we will navigate the road ahead with clarity and purpose.
At a time when the broader national landscape presents challenges and uncertainty for higher education, I want to acknowledge the concerns that many of you may feel. While external pressures continue to evolve, our focus remains unwavering: to serve as a pillar of progress for Nevada and beyond.
UNLV has always been defined by the perseverance, drive, and innovative spirit of its people. I am honored to serve in this role, and I look forward to working together as we continue to build a bright future for our university.
Warm wishes,
Warm Wishes,
Chris Heavey
Officer in Charge
