Yesterday, it was announced that Marta Meana will be retiring from UNLV in November after nearly three decades of exceptional dedication to the university.
Meana has been a transformative presence at UNLV since she joined the Department of Psychology in 1997. As one of the architects of the Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology, she played a key role in establishing one of the university’s most successful graduate programs. As a clinical psychologist, her research in women’s sexual health has reshaped clinical practices and earned her national and international recognition. Over the course of her career, Meana has authored two books, two edited volumes, 34 chapters, and over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Her scholarship has received accolades such as the Masters and Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Sex Therapy and Research, the James Makawa Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Psychology from the Nevada Psychological Association, and the Barrick Distinguished Scholar Award.
Meana’s contributions to UNLV extend far beyond her research and teaching. Having held multiple leadership roles, she has been instrumental in elevating UNLV’s academic programs. As dean of the Honors College, she led efforts to significantly grow enrollment and foster a more inclusive environment. Later, during her tenure as interim president from 2018-2020, she guided the university through pivotal developments, including the advancement of the medical school and securing funding for key infrastructure projects.
Over the years, she has mentored dozens of doctoral and master’s students and been a positive and supportive force in the lives of so many others.
To celebrate Meana’s incredible accomplishments and to thank her for her dedicated service, the entire campus community is invited to a retirement reception in her honor on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Tam Alumni Center.
We kindly ask that you RSVP here if you plan to attend.
