Haroon Sahotra Selected as Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and the Office of Faculty Affairs are pleased to announce that Haroon Sahotra, Ph.D., has been selected as the new associate vice provost for faculty affairs, following a campus search. His appointment is effective on Jan. 1, 2025.

Sahotra brings strong experience in academic leadership and a stellar record of scholarship to this important role. He has served as the director of the Teaching and Learning Commons, director of the GIS and Remote Sensing Core Lab, and as liaison for the Sustainability in Arid Lands interdisciplinary research group, among other positions. He has been a faculty member at UNLV since 2011 in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction. In his leadership roles, he has fostered inclusive environments for faculty and leveraged funding opportunities to support the university’s diverse student population and promote equity and justice.

“Dr. Sahotra is committed to promoting a climate of inclusivity and faculty success,” said Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Gary Totten. “His experience and approach will support our efforts to accelerate faculty development initiatives at UNLV.”

“Dr. Sahotra’s faculty-centered approach is impressive,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Chris L. Heavey. “His collaborative leadership style and understanding of faculty research needs will be a great asset to the Faculty Affairs team.”

Sahotra holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Brigham Young University, an M.S. in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems from the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand, and a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad, Pakistan. His research interests include remote sensing, GIS, water,
and climate. He has published numerous articles and conference proceedings, participated in securing $46 million in grant funding, and is the recipient of multiple research, teaching, and mentoring awards.
