Eadington Fellow Colloquium: A Blackjack Dealer, a Letter, and an Unlikely Friendship Rooted in Holocaust History April 11

'“Dear Occupants of Dohrmannstrasse 1': A House, a Stream, and Two Telephones" is a talk by Kevin Ostoyich, a William R. Eadington Fellow in UNLV Special Collections & Archives and a history professor at Valparaiso University. The talk will be held Friday, April 11 at 10 a.m. in the Goldfield Room at Lied Library.

The talk explores the unexpected friendship between Gary Sternberg, a retired Caesars Palace blackjack dealer who fled Nazi Germany as a child, and the German couple now living in his former home. After writing them a letter in 2019, a transformative exchange began, leading both sides to confront history and find healing.

This story is the first chapter in Ostoyich’s upcoming book, One Family: Stories of Friendship and Healing Arising from the Holocaust, which also features dancer Jackie Beer and survivor-activist Raymonde Fiol. Inspired by Fiol’s message — “We are all members of one family” — the book highlights stories of reconciliation and remembrance. UNLV Special Collections & Archives holds materials related to all three figures.

The William R. Eadington Fellowship program is sponsored by the University Libraries Special Collections and Archives and funds scholarly research into our collections on gaming and Las Vegas.
