Do you have a teen driver or soon-to-be driver? Join Teen Driver Safety Day! July 11

Your teenage driver or soon-to-be driver is invited to attend a day-long driver education program on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the UNLV campus. Teen Driver Safety Day is designed to help young drivers understand the serious consequences of distracted and impaired driving.

This highly interactive event will begin at 8 a.m. with a crash reenactment, 911 call, and police and EMS response in parking lot N behind the Thomas & Mack Center. One of the vehicles in the mock crash will be a group of teens whose driver chose to drink and drive, and the passengers made the terrible choice of getting in the car with him. The remainder of the day’s program will take place indoors, in CHB-A108, and help participants see what happens due to those bad choices.

Teens will hear from a trauma surgeon as he “treats victims of the crash” and police who talk about the DUI process. There will also be a staged trial for the driver, complete with the presence of a judge who regularly presides over DUI cases.

The afternoon will include LVMPD detectives investigating fatal crashes and explaining why math and science are critical to their jobs. Teens will also have the opportunity to see In the Blink of an Eye, a powerful presentation about a crash in Clark County, presented by the officer who created it. The day will end with a panel of family members whose lives were forever changed by a car crash.

This event is part of the 2024 National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) held at UNLV. This federally funded summer transportation camp for Nevada high school students exposes young people to careers in the areas of transportation industry and public safety.

Those who register will receive a confirmation email with additional event details (location, drop-off, and pick-up times) closer to the event's date.

Please note that teens are required to stay for the entire day and will be supervised.  Participants will need to bring $10 for lunch at the UNLV Dining Commons.

Please RVSP at the link below by July 1, 2024, at 5 p.m. Space is available for the first 80 individuals to sign up.
