Caricaturing the Candidates: The Mike Smith Editorial Cartoons Exhibition

Caricaturing the Candidates: The Mike Smith Editorial Cartoons, a new exhibition from the UNLV Libraries, is now on display on the first floor of Lied Library.

The exhibition includes selections from the Mike Smith Editorial Cartoons (MS-01047), depicting Smith’s election coverage from 1984 - 2020.

Smith is a nationally syndicated political cartoonist who draws for the Las Vegas Sun. Smith, who has worked at the Sun since 1983, and Sun Publisher Brian Greenspun, donated Smith's editorial cartoon archive to Special Collections & Archives in 2021. The collection depicts major current events and politics at the local and national level, and includes representations of Nevada politicians such as Richard Bryan, Harry Reid, and Oscar Goodman.

The exhibition, curated by UNLV alum Noah Price ('21, History & English), also includes information on the history of political cartoons and Smith’s personal background, as well as a video of Smith sketching several of his presidential caricatures.

The exhibition will be available through the fall semester. Voting for the 2024 election will be available in Lied Library for both Early Voting from Wednesday, October 30 - Friday, November 1 and on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5.

If you are interested in arranging a tour of the exhibit, arranging a class presentation with Smith, or seeing more of Smith's work in Special Collections & Archives, contact Aaron Mayes, Visual Materials Curator.
