Apply to Be an Alternative Breaks Staff Learning Partner

The office of Service Learning & Leadership is seeking applications for Staff Learning Partners who will help lead this spring's Alternative Break Trips.

The Alternative Breaks team is currently recruiting for the following Spring Break (March 16-22, 2025) trips:

  • Food Security & Justice (San Diego, CA)
  • Sexual & Reproductive Rights (San Francisco, CA)
  • Mass Incarceration & Community Development (Los Angeles, CA)

We are also recruiting for the following Post-Finals (May 18-24, 2025) trips:

  • Conservation & Ecology (Catalina Island, CA)
  • Harm Reduction (San Francisco, CA)

Trips include activities such as service projects, panels with community leaders, and tours with local organizations. Through these experiences, students can learn about the impacts of their trip topics, dissect the root causes of those issues, and bring back new knowledge and skills for positive social change within our communities. The overarching goal of the program is to develop community collaborators through education, community engagement, dialogue, and reflection.

The Staff Learning Partner (SLP) is an individual who assists, supports, and empowers student Site Leaders through the duration of planning and implementation of an Alternative Break (AB) trip. The individual in this position must promote the purpose of the AB program, student leadership, and civic engagement. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Assisting in student leadership development, attending and engaging in ongoing trainings, being fully present and available for the site leaders and participants while on an AB trip, assisting with group facilitation and interaction, and supporting and promoting the physical and emotional well being of the participants and site leaders during the trip planning, hosting, and debriefing process. SLPs are expected to participate in all group activities before, during, and after the trip and adhere to all guidelines set forth by the group and by the AB program.

Staff Learning Partners will have all basic trips costs covered by the program and they will also receive a modest $300 stipend for their time.

If you are interested, please complete the online application ASAP. Review of applications and invitations to brief 30-minute interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis, but interested parties should seek to apply no later than December 6, 2024 for full consideration.

Should you have any questions, please contact the Alternative Breaks Program Coordinator (Leanne Soter) at Leanne.Soter@unlv.edu.
