The UNLV Jean Nidetch Women's Center, in collaboration with the Nevada Coalition Against Sexual Violence, Community Action Against Rape, Area Health Education Center, and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Center, is sponsoring a half-day workshop titled, "No More Denying: Woman-to-Woman Sexual Violence."
The workshop will be held April 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the UNLV Reynolds Student Services Complex, Room 254. It is being held in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Continuing Education Unit credits have been approved for nurses, social workers, marriage and family therapists, Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse counselors, psychologists, and law enforcement personnel.
Dr. Lori Girshick, guest lecturer and author, will present information on woman-to-woman sexual violence based on her research with lesbian and bisexual survivors of this abuse. A professor of sociology and women's studies at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C., she has documented a continuum of sexual violence types through personal stories and data from various research studies.
Areas covered in the workshop will include denial within the lesbian communities and in the broader society, language and labeling issues, legal heterosexism, agency programming, outreach and anti-oppression work, and theoretical challenges to feminist understanding of interpersonal violence.
The presentation will be informal lecture style with question-and-answer breaks.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to discuss this hidden problem, define the unique problems and challenges for women whose perpetrators are other women, name and validate the experiences of lesbian and bisexual women clients, and promote agency programs specifically for these women.
The $25 registration fee includes a UNLV parking pass.
