Harvey Wallmann, director of UNLV's physical therapy program, has been certified as a clinical specialist in sports physical therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
Wallmann is the only person in Nevada who has earned the certification. Nationwide, 270 physical therapists have earned the designation.
At UNLV, Wallmann heads the state's first physical therapy program. The program will begin its first degree offering -- a master's degree in physical therapy -- next week.
Wallmann has two master's degrees -- one in exercise physiology from Purdue University and one in physical therapy from the University of Indianapolis. He also earned a bachelor's degree in movement and sports science from Purdue. He is pursuing a doctoral degree in physical therapy from Loma Linda University. Wallmann is a licensed physical therapist and holds certification as a strength and conditioning specialist and athletic trainer.
The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, an appointed board of the American Physical Therapy Association, awards certificates to physical therapists meeting approved requirements. To receive board certification, candidates must successfully complete an examination and demonstrate specialized knowledge and advanced clinical proficiency in a specific area of physical therapy practice.
The American Physical Therapy Association is a national professional organization representing more than 75,000 members. Its goal is to foster improvements in physical therapy practice, research, and education.
