UNLV has hired a new vice president for finance, according to President Carol C. Harter. Anthony B. Flores, associate vice chancellor for business and finance at UC-Davis, will begin his new duties at UNLV effective July 1.
Flores has held the associate vice chancellor position at UC-Davis since 1996. Prior to that he was Davis's assistant vice chancellor for finance (1991-1996) and director of fiscal operations at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, Calif. (1979-1991).
"We are very pleased to have Tony Flores joining the UNLV administration," Harter said. "He has broad-based fiscal experience at two first-rate California institutions. His experience includes implementing a major financial system for tracking approximately $1.4 billion in expenditures at Davis, as well as managing over $200 million in research funds, primarily from federal and state sources, grants, and contracts. His experience will be most helpful to UNLV as we become a major research university."
Flores said, "This is a wonderful opportunity for me. I look forward to joining Dr. Harter's team and to contributing to the future success of UNLV's academic and research missions."
He noted that the opportunity is unique in that UNLV's aspirations seem to match the dynamic growth of Southern Nevada.
"It was all the energy and creative thinking and action that is so apparent in the community that appealed to me from the start," he said. "I am excited to get going."
Flores holds the master of public administration degree from the School of Public Administration, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and has completed the course work for the Ph.D. in public administration at USC, Sacramento. He earned the bachelor's degree in business administration at California State University, Fullerton.
Flores will replace George Scaduto, who has served as interim vice president of finance since January 1999.
