University Forum is a free public lecture series sponsored by the UNLV College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by The Jerry Kalafatis Lodge Charitable Foundation and the UNLV Foundation. Unless otherwise noted, the following lectures will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History, located on the UNLV campus.
September 12
"Earthquakes in Southern Nevada? Don't Be Scared - Be Prepared."
Barbara Luke and other members of the Southern Nevada Earthquake Research Team will present a lecture to educate the public about the realties of seismic activity in Southern Nevada. The event will include information about preparedness and safety for residents of Nevada - the third most seismically active state in the country.
September 21
"A Tour of the Solar System"
Professor George Rhee of the UNLV physics department will provide a survey of the solar system, featuring recent discoveries and the most current images. Beginning with the Sun, Rhee will touch on each planet and continue to the outer reaches of the solar system where the Kuiper belt and the Oart cloud of comets can be found.
September 26
"The Dinosaurs of Southern Utah: St. George and the Dragon...Tracks"
Jerry Harris, Director of Paleontology at Dixie State College, will discuss how the well-preserved footprints of dinosaurs and prehistoric animals found on the shores of "Lake Dixie" reveal a wealth of information. Harris will discuss how these clues are helping to
develop a better understanding of these ancient creatures, including how
early carnivorous dinosaurs displayed some bird-like behaviors.

"The Arboretum at UNLV"
Susan Jones of the UNLV Arboretum will host an evening walk around the university's arboretum. Over two decades ago, the campus of UNLV was designated as an arboretum, which covers all 335 acres of campus and includes over 80 acres of plant life. The walking tour will include a variety of landscapes, from the drought tolerant desert garden to more traditional trees and lawn of the main mall. The one and one-half mile walk will include background about historical spaces on campus.
