UNLV's Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble will join forces Tuesday, Nov. 13, inside Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall to create a memorable evening of the city's finest music.
George Stelluto, musical director for the UNLV Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the performance, which is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
The performance also will feature jazz greats Marvin Stamm and Ed Soph.
Stamm, who is a highly praised jazz trumpet player, has recorded with such artists as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Barbara Streisand, and Lena Horn. Soph is a drummer whose career spans forty years as a performer, recording artist, author, and teacher.
Stefan Karlsson, coordinator of the jazz studies program, said that he is looking forward to showing the community the beauty of mixing classical and jazz music.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for people to see the way that the music can blend," Karlsson said. "It will show that music is music, regardless of style, and it can always come together. Also, it's a great opportunity for the students to experience different styles and for the audience to be treated to world-class musicians."
Stelluto echoed those sentiments and said that he is pleased the orchestra and jazz programs are combining for the concert and hopes that it can be made into a yearly event.
"Jazz is an idiom that classically trained orchestral musicians need to know," Stelluto said. "It is, after all, an American musical style emulated in the compositions of Ravel, Debussy, and other European composers of art music. It is also a part of our history and something unique that we, as American musicians, bring to the cultural table worldwide." Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $8 for students and can be purchased by calling the Performing Arts Center Box Office at (702) 895-2787.
