The Jean Nidetch Women's Center is celebrating its 10th year at UNLV this year. Located in the Donald W. Reynolds Student Services Center at UNLV, it has become a valuable resource for the local community as well as students, faculty, and staff.
In 1993, Jean Nidetch, creator of Weight Watchers International, made a major donation to the university to fund the center and set up a scholarship endowment for students who have overcome adversity to achieve their academic goals.
"The Jean Nidetch Women's Center has been a valuable resource for students on campus," UNLV President Carol C. Harter said. "The center and the Jean Nidetch Scholarship Program have helped countless students adjust to and succeed in college. Jean Nidetch is a wonderful role model, and we are grateful for the enthusiasm she has always shown for our students here at UNLV."
Center Director Conee Spano has more than 19 years' experience in higher education and is an active volunteer in the community. Her expertise in program management, course development, recruitment, marketing, fund raising, and community relations ensure that the Women's Center continues to successfully address the needs of Southern Nevada women while remaining self-supporting.
Spano's sexual- and dating-violence prevention programs have become models for similar programs in the state.
"It is through such violence prevention programs as well as our services for adults returning to college, support for non-traditional students, and scholarships that students can have a safe, well-informed, and positive experience at UNLV," Spano said.
