UNLV's Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering will host two upcoming teaching workshops at the university.
Richard Felder and Rebecca Brent will present a day-and-a-half workshop on "Effective College Teaching." The workshop will be held 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Feb. 22 and will continue Feb. 23 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Felder is Hoechst Celanese professor emeritus of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Brent is an educational consultant, co-director of the faculty development program of the National Science Foundation-sponsored SUCCEED Coalition, and adjunct professor of education at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. Together, they regularly present workshops on effective teaching, course design, mentoring and supporting new faculty members, and faculty development on campuses around the country and abroad. This particular workshop is tailored specifically for professors and/or graduate students in the physical and mathematical sciences, engineering, and engineering technology. Campus-wide audiences from all disciplines may benefit as well.
The second workshop, "Designing and Redesigning Engineering Courses to Address EC2000," will be held 1-5 p.m. Feb. 23. It will offer ideas for designing or redesigning engineering courses in a manner that addresses all of the engineering criteria requirements of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Participants should bring outlines and syllabi for their own courses and plan modifications using workshop strategies and techniques.
Both workshops, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the Thomas Beam Engineering Building, Room A-107. For additional information, call 895-3699.
