The UNLV Wind Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Leslie, will perform "New Master Works for Wind Orchestra," a concert of music by today's most contemporary composers. The event will take place 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 inside Artemus Ham Concert Hall on the UNLV campus.
The composers who will be present at the concert include Warren Barker, Steven Bryant, Jonathan Newman, Eric Whitacre, and James Bonney. Whitacre is scheduled to conduct his piece,Cloudburst, and Bonney will perform electric guitar during his piece,Chaos Theory. Other works featured include Barker's Jubilaeum, Bryant's Alchemy in Silent Spaces Movement I and Interruption Overture; Newman's Moon By Night and Uncle Sid; and Bonney's Reflections in a Tidal Pool.
Recognized for a fresh, interpretative style among collegiate wind orchestras, Leslie and the UNLV Wind Orchestra continue to commission new works by the next generation of the world's finest young composers. This ensemble, under Leslie's baton, has premiered numerous pieces and has recently conducted, recorded, and produced six compact recordings on the MARK RECORDS label. These compact discs are 1994 - The UNLV Wind Symphony: Ghost Train; Gawd$illa Eats Las Vegas; It Takes a Village; Monkey, and No Mo' Chalumeau. These recordings have received noteworthy acclaim in professional journals in addition to high praise from colleagues throughout the world.
Tickets are $8 general admission, $5 for students, military and seniors, and free for UNLV faculty, staff, and students. Tickets are on sale at the Performing Arts Center box office located in the southeast corner of the parking garage.
