UNLV officials want to warn members of the public against falling victim to a scheme in which young adults purporting to be UNLV students claim to be selling magazines to benefit the university.
UNLV's Greenspun School of Communication has received several phone calls in recent days from people who say that young adults claiming to be UNLV students have come to their doors and asked them to buy magazine subscriptions to help support the communication school. In one twist, the young adult told a perspective buyer that the seller would receive a monetary bonus from the university if the buyer paid by cash rather than by check.
Neither UNLV nor the Greenspun School is conducting any fund-raising involving magazine sales or any other type of door-to-door sales.
Most of the calls about the magazine sale scheme have come from northwestern areas of the Las Vegas Valley, including Summerlin.
