UNLV undergraduate student Shipra De, a triple major in math, computer science and economics, has been named a 2010 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. De joins an elite group of aspiring scientists, mathematicians and engineers selected from more than 1,111 highly qualified applicants. De will receive $7,500 toward her undergraduate education as a recipient of the arguably most prestigious scholarship available to undergraduate science majors in the United States.
De, a Green Valley High School graduate and aspiring university professor, actively participates in engineering college activities, the math honors society and the UNLV Honors Student Council. Additionally, she co-authored a paper published in a well-established mathematics journal - a rarity for an undergraduate student. On her triple major, the 22-year-old notes, "math is the language of economics and computer science is its tool. Everything has been a great combination. While I have the opportunity, I'm going to learn as much as possible."
"Shipra De has a broad range of interests which she seeks with discipline and passion, said Peter Starkweather, dean of the Honors College at UNLV. "She is widely admired by the campus mathematics and honors communities and is very supportive of her peers."
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program, was established in 1986 to honor the five-term U.S. Republican Senator from Arizona. Many of the 6,000 Goldwater Scholars received further recognition through Rhodes and Churchill scholarships and fellowships from the Marshall Foundation.
