The UNLV Arboretum and the Nevada Cooperative Extension Service Master Gardeners will sponsor a tour of shade trees on the UNLV campus 7-9 p.m. Aug. 25.

The tour will begin at the Xeric Garden amphitheater located near the entrance of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. The tour will focus on mature shade trees that act as "nature's air conditioners," according to arboretum director Dennis Swartzell.

During the short walk, tour leaders will point out evergreen and deciduous trees that perform well in Las Vegas, as well as a few new trees that appear promising as the shade trees of the future. Master gardeners will be present to help direct tour participants, distribute informative literature, and answer general gardening questions.

Those interested in attending should enter the campus on Harmon Avenue from Paradise Road or Swenson Street. They should then follow Harmon east to the parking area located adjacent to the museum and follow the signs from the parking lot. Parking is free after 7 p.m.
