UNLV agreed Wednesday (April 12) to a settlement with former mathematics professor Michael Goldberg in which the university will pay Goldberg $830,000 in damages stemming from the professor's termination from UNLV in 1990.
The court had recently found that Goldberg's termination 10 years ago was not legal. UNLV Provost Douglas Ferraro represented the university in a settlement conference on Wednesday.
"The economic expert retained by the University and Community College of Nevada estimated UNLV would be liable for more than $900,000 in back pay for Dr. Goldberg," Ferraro said. "Projecting future damages to age 65 would bring the potential liability up to $1.4 million, exclusive of attorney's fees, which would elevate the total to nearly $2 million."
The settlement involves no reinstatement, and according the agreement no future claims can be brought against UNLV on this matter, Ferraro said.
