UNLV's Rebel Recycling program will hold its semi-annual yard sale from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8-9. The sale will feature items donated by students who have recently moved out of the campus residence halls.
"The size and scope of the yard sale is a great visual," says Tara Pike, Rebel Recycling coordinator. "We have so many clothes, shoes, linens, books, dishes, and toys that it's overwhelming. This year we collected over 8,000 pounds of reusable items."
All proceeds from the sale will support the Rebel Recycling program's efforts to divert large amounts of UNLV's waste stream to recycling and reuse. People who bring in traditional recyclables, such as aluminum, plastic beverage containers, and paper, will receive a discount on their yard sale purchases.
UNLV hotel administration students are managing the sale as part of their coursework for a facilities management course. The students are learning advertising, marketing, merchandising, and customer-service skills through the management of the project.
"By participating in this hands-on management experience, I am learning more," said student Lindsey Stein. "I feel like I am making a difference on my campus and in my community, and, at the same time, benefiting academically from the experience."
Margi Baxter, assistant Rebel Recycling coordinator, said all items for sale are reasonably priced. "Patrons can get jeans for a dollar, a book or a T-shirt for a quarter, and shoes for fifty cents to a dollar. Most of the items are below a dollar. It is a great place for a family to buy clothes for growing teenagers or for a construction worker to get work clothes."
The Rebel Recycling Program is located on the southeast corner of Flamingo Road and Swenson Street behind the two solar dishes. The sale is held in the yard and in one of the two gray double-wide trailers with red trim.
