UNLV's Rebel Recycling Program will be holding a huge yard sale from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. April 26 and 27. The sale will feature items donated by students when they moved out of the campus residence halls.
"The size and scope of the yard sale is a great visual," said Tara Pike, Rebel Recycling coordinator. "We have so many clothes, shoes, linens, books, dishes, and toys that it is overwhelming."
All proceeds will go to support the campus recycling program.
A group of UNLV hotel management students are managing the sale as part of their work for HMD 395, a facilities management course. The students are learning advertising, marketing, merchandising, and customer-service skills through the management of the project.
"By participating in this hands-on management experience, I am learning more," said student Alissa Yamane. "I feel like I am making a difference at my campus and in my community, and, at the same time, I am benefiting from the experience."
Margi Baxter, assistant Rebel Recycling coordinator, said all items for sale are reasonably priced. "Patrons can get jeans for a dollar, a book or a T-shirt for a quarter, and shoes for fifty cents to a dollar. Most of the items are below a dollar. It is a great place for a family to buy clothes for growing teenagers or for a construction worker to get work clothes."
"I've bought great work clothes, books, office supplies, and some knickknacks," says Allie Smith, a regular shopper at the biannual yard sale. "I wouldn't miss it for anything."
"I got an entire outfit for two dollars, and that included a pair of shoes. You cannot beat this bargain," says Lacey Tojo, an HMD 395 student. "Our UNLV management team will help everyone find what they are looking for."
The Rebel Recycling Program is located on the southeast corner of Flamingo Road and Swenson Street behind the two solar dishes. The sale is held in the yard and in one of the two gray double-wide trailers with red trim.
