UNLV biology professor Penny Amy has been selected to serve as interim dean of the university's Graduate College, UNLV President Carol C. Harter announced Wednesday (Jan. 7.)
Amy, who has taught at UNLV since 1985, began her new job Jan. 5. The Graduate College administers all of UNLV's doctoral and master's degree programs.
"Penny proved her administrative abilities when serving as chair of the biological sciences department. We believe she will be an asset to the Graduate College," Harter said.
Provost Douglas P. Ferraro concurred, saying, "We know Penny will be able to provide the Graduate College with the type of leadership it needs as we increase the graduate intensity of UNLV."
Amy has received many awards over the years. Among them are being selected as a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and as the 1992 Barrick Scholar and Outstanding Researcher at UNLV. She also has received awards from the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada for both her teaching and research.
She earned a doctoral degree in microbiology from Oregon State University and both a master's and a bachelor's degree in biology from Portland State University.
