UNLV College of Extended Studies professor Al McDaniels has been named an assistant coach for the United States women's track & field squad at the 1999 Pan American Games to be held July 24-Aug. 8, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The former UNLV head coach was part of the Nevada delegation to the 1997 USA Track & Field national convention in Dallas, from Dec. 2-6. He is a member of the men's and women's development , the masters track & field, and the officials certification committees.
For 18 seasons, McDaniels guided the women's cross country and track & field programs at UNLV (1974-92), leading the women's outdoor team to five Big West Conference championships (1984, '85, '86, '89, '90) and 10 NCAA championship appearances, including a sixth-place finish in 1992.
The four-time conference coach of the year has mentored 29 All-Americans, including Sheila Tarr, the 1984 NCAA Champion in the heptathlon; Trena Hull, the 1987 NCAA Champion in the indoor 1000 meters; and Trevaia Williams, alternate for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team in the 400-meter hurdles.
McDaniel also worked with Lisa Austin, track & field coach at The Meadows, who finished eighth in the triple jump at the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials.
