The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, regarded as one of the world's finest symphonic ensembles, brings its tour to Las Vegas for the first time ever with a performance at the UNLV Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 28 as part of the Charles Vanda Master Series. Juilliard faculty member Cho-Liang Lin, named by Musical America as Instrumentalist of the Year for 2000, will perform as soloist. Lin and the orchestra will perform three works from Tchaikovsky: "Cappricio Italien, Op. 45;" "Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35;" and "Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64."
Conducted by Yuri Simonov, the ensemble's repertoire encompasses the complete works of Russian classical composers, as well as the music of Mahler, Copland, Bernstein, and Gershwin. In addition, the orchestra performs numerous works of Western avant-garde.
The Moscow Philharmonic has made more than 100 recordings, many of which have been honored with music's most coveted prizes. It participates regularly in the most prestigious music festivals of Europe and has performed more than 5,000 concerts.
Lin is one of the foremost violin virtuosos of today. He appears annually with major orchestras and on key recital and chamber music series on five continents. Lin has performed with the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Vancouver Symphony, among others.
