The UNLV Performing Arts Center presents the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra at Lincoln Center, led by pianist and musical director Arturo O'Farrill, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 as part of the New York Stage & Beyond series. Comprised of 18 prominent soloists from the Latin jazz scene, this large ensemble will play classics of the Afro-Latin jazz tradition.
The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra is part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center not-for-profit arts organization that features a comprehensive array of guest artists and a unique vision for the continued development of the art of jazz.
O'Farrill, winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award for 2003, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. In 2002, he and musician Wynton Marsalis created the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center due in part to a large and substantial body of music in the genre of Latin and Afro Cuban Jazz that deserved to be experienced by the general jazz audience.
