UNLV will be offering a number of courses at locations off campus this spring in a continuing effort to make its class offerings more easily accessible to the public.

University courses will be offered in Henderson at both the Community College of Southern Nevada campus there and at the new Foothill High School.

In the northeastern part of the valley, classes will be conducted at Nellis Air Force Base.

Distance-education courses as well as credit-granting classes coordinated through UNLV's College of Extended Studies will be offered at various locations around Southern Nevada. Some of the distance-education courses are available in other areas of the state as well.

"UNLV has offered classes off campus for many years, but Southern Nevada's tremendous growth has led us to re-examine what we offer and where," said Associate Provost Barbara Cloud. "That's why we now have classes in Henderson and also offer courses via distance education.

"The Maryland Parkway campus will remain the heart of UNLV, but we can deliver classes almost anywhere students want them. Both the southeast, including Henderson - which now is Nevada's second largest city, and the northwest, including Summerlin, have populations who have made education a priority. If making classes more convenient in terms of time and place improves access, that's what we plan to do," Cloud said.

In Henderson, the seven upper-division or graduate courses offered at the CCSN campus and at Foothill this spring will include topics in business, education, business writing and public relations, and public administration. Among the 19 courses scheduled for Nellis are human biology, educational psychology, oral communication, principles of macroeconomics, survey of American literature II, marketing management, introduction to American politics, general psychology, and introduction to sociology. Classes taught at Nellis are open to all UNLV students. Registration for those courses, however, must take place at Nellis so that the paperwork necessary to allow students access to the base can be completed. At least 30 distance-education classes will be available this spring. In addition to a number of education and nursing courses, scheduled classes include counseling the older adult; research methods in criminal justice; humans and the environment; introduction to the casino; personnel administration in the hospitality industry; ethnic and minority politics; and development: infancy and childood.

The majority of classes will be offered via two-way video between UNLV and specific off campus sites; others will be offered online or through a combination of online and prerecorded video, said Charlotte Farr, UNLV's director of distance education. The continuing education division of the College of Extended Studies has more than a dozen credit-granting classes scheduled for off-campus locations this spring. Courses include administration of libraries and information centers; using picture books to teach writing traits; field studies in nature writing, natural history, and environmental thought; public lands survey system; a field school in Great Basin archaeology and paleoecology; minerals in society; and legal issues in health care for nurses.
