Beginning this fall, UNLV's department of educational leadership in the College of Education will offer a new core of graduate degree options.
The new degrees offered are the master of science in physical education and the master of education in physical education. Both are under the direction of the graduate program for sports education and leadership.
"The two master degree options complement one another by meeting the needs of professional practitioners and research scholars," said Gene Hall, dean of the College of Education. "We are offering a scientific track that prepares students for research and scholarly writing in the area of physical education and sports, as well as an educational track that will enhance teaching and coaching in both secondary schools and university settings."
Tom Sharpe, graduate program coordinator for sports education, said, "Given the number of position openings in this professional area, coupled with the growing needs of the continually expanding Las Vegas community, we are hoping to fill an important need through the flagship graduate education center that UNLV's College of Education is developing."
The master of education degree program is designed for professionals working in education and structured sports programs. It will enhance the knowledge and skills students need for effective teaching, coaching, and administration of sports programs.
The master of science degree is viewed as a foundation for doctoral work and will include a core of research methods studies. It will culminate in a thesis or professional research project.
"Our goals for these programs include attracting a culturally diverse group of students and strengthening ties among the UNLV teacher education community and other regional, national, and international institutions," said Teresa Jordan, chair of the department of educational leadership.
The sports education and leadership faculty has already established exchange programs in Japan and Korea and has fostered educational outreach programs with the Clark County School District, community recreation centers, and the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy. They are also developing programs for graduate assistantships and fellowships for students.
Graduate education student Kevin Kent added, "The close working relationship between the physical education faculty and the UNLV athletic department provides students a great set of opportunities for gaining practical experience."
