UNLV and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) mourn the passing of former regent and UNLV alumnus Dr. Jack Lund Schofield, who died Saturday at age 91.

Schofield was a member of the NSHE Board of Regents from 2003 to 2014, and he served in the Nevada Legislature in 1970s. In 1995, at the age of 72, Schofield earned a doctorate in education from UNLV.

"Dr. Jack Schofield understood the power of education and was a tireless advocate for UNLV and for higher education in Nevada," said UNLV President Len Jessup. "I've quickly come to learn that his passion for the success of Nevada's students, from kindergarten to high school, was unmatched. The impact of his service will be felt for many years."

A decorated World War II veteran, Schofield spent more than 40 years in the Clark County School District as a teacher, coach and administrator. Jack Lund Schofield Middle School was named for the lifelong educator in 2001.
