Students from the UNLV Boyd School of Law made the top U.S. team at the American Bar Association National Client Counseling Competition. Elizabeth Naccarato and Jenny Routheaux placed first among American teams and second overall in the competition. The pair has advanced to represent the United States at the International Client Counseling Competition, which will be held April 10 - 13 at the University of Sydney in Australia.
"We are extremely proud of the team and of the great support we received from the law school community," said Boyd School of Law professor and director of the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution Jean Sternlight, who helped lead Boyd students to top honors in the competition for the third straight year.
In the regional competition, students were placed in a simulated counseling situation, during which they had to act as attorneys and conduct an interview with an actor playing the role of a client. In a set amount of time, each team had to demonstrate competence of counseling skills in dealing with their client's legal problem. The approach stressed the value of preventive law techniques that attorneys can use to help clients avoid lengthy trials and resolve disputes creatively and efficiently.
