UNLV junior Inna Bashta has been chosen as one of 12 students from across the nation to receive a fellowship to attend the 2001 Summer School in Nuclear and Radiochemistry at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The award is valued in excess of $11,000.
She will participate in the intensive six-week school, which consists of both lecture and laboratory work on the fundamentals of nuclear science and its applications to nuclear medicine and related fields. The school will take place June 18 through July 27 at the laboratory located on Long Island, New York.
Bashta, who makes her home in Las Vegas, is a chemistry major. She also is pursuing a minor in physics.
Students participating in the summer program at Brookhaven will have the opportunity to visit research sites, attend a guest lecture series, and meet and interact with prominent research scientists working in nuclear and radiochemistry.
Graduates of the 2001 school will be encouraged to join a research project during the following summer at a university or federal research institution. They will receive assistance in obtaining summer research positions and in securing admission to doctoral or medical degree programs in nuclear science.
The summer school program was founded by the division of nuclear chemistry and technology of the American Chemical Society (ACS) as an educational outreach activity to promote interest in nuclear science and to provide trained personnel to meet national needs in nuclear research, the nuclear power industry, nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceuticals, and the federally funded national laboratories.
The fellowship includes round-trip transportation, room and board, books, laboratory supplies, and the costs of instruction and tuition for six transferable college credits awarded through the chemistry program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy and administered through the ACS.
