The UNLV Jazz Bands, featuring UNLV Jazz I, II, and the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Judy Bayley Theatre on the UNLV campus. Wayne Bergeron, a top lead trumpet player from Los Angeles, also will perform as a special guest.
Tickets for the concert are $5 general admission and free to seniors, military, and UNLV students with valid student I.D. Tickets can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Box Office or by calling 895-ARTS (2787). The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Bergeron is one of the most in-demand lead trumpet players on the L.A. scene. From studio calls to theater work, performing with major orchestras, to jazz gigs and clinics, Bergeron keeps a hectic schedule. He has played on more than 250 motion picture scores and television soundtracks. In addition, he has recorded with such names as Mel Torme, Diana Krall, Billy Joel, Arturo Sandoval, Tito Puente, Joe Cocker, Keeley Smith, Bette Midler, Dianne Reeves, Celine Dion, and Chicago.
David Loeb, director of UNLV Jazz Studies, received a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from The Eastman School of Music. As a jazz pianist, Loeb performed with many renowned jazz legends including Freddie Hubbard, Ray Brown, Tom Scott, Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, and Tom Harrell. He is an established recording pianist for television and feature films and is currently principal keyboardist with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Loeb arranged for The Academy Awards, orchestrated for several recording artists including George Benson and Doc Severinsen, and composed the music for television documentaries. He also has conducted numerous symphony orchestras for the Tony Award-winning entertainer Ben Vereen and The Philadelphia Orchestra for internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Bruce Paulson, assistant director of UNLV Jazz Studies, graduated from the University of Minnesota where he studied trombone with Steven Zellmer of the Minnesota Orchestra. Paulson also studied with Frank Chrisafulli of the Chicago Symphony. He became the lead trombone player in the Buddy Rich Band in 1971, and in 1972 was asked to join the NBC Tonight Show Band directed by Doc Severinsen. He remained with the band for twenty years and also recorded with numerous artists including Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole and Michel Legrand. Paulson also was an original member of the Toshiko Akiyoshi big band.
