The Women's Studies department at UNLV will host the annual conference of the National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) June 13-16 at the Alexis Park Hotel and Conference Center.
This conference will bring together hundreds of feminist scholars and activists from around the country.
A mini-conference, titled "Deconstructing Sin City," will highlight the research of UNLV professors in such areas as addiction and the entertainment, gaming, and sex industries.
Conference sessions will include "NWSA: Women of All Colors Building an Inclusive Organization Together"; "Political Women and Political Power"; and "Body Politics."
Featured speakers will include Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation; Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union; and Sonali Kolhatkar, vice president of the Afghan Women's Mission.
A keynote panel will open the conference at 7 p.m. on June 13. The conference is open to both NWSA members and non-members. The cost for registration before May 1 is $105 for NWSA members and $130 for non-members. The cost to register before June 1 is $125 for NWSA members and $150 for non-members. On-site registration will cost $145 for members and $170 for non-members. NWSA-member students can register for $55.
In conjunction with the conference, UNLV's art department and the Donna Beam Fine Arts Gallery will present conceptual artist Amy Adler's "Centerfold" June 1-14. The exhibition will mark the debut of a series of works based on Adler's provocative centerfold in the January 2002 issue of "Artforum" magazine. Assistant curator Libby Lumpkin has organized the exhibit to commemorate the NWSA's 25th anniversary.
