UNLV has hired the director of public safety at the City University of New York to lead its department of public safety, according to Robert Ackerman, vice president for student services.
Jose Elique will begin his new duties as director of public safety at UNLV on June 1. He will be responsible for the campus police force.
"It will be my pleasure to implement some of the changes envisioned by the officials at UNLV in order to provide the university community with what will hopefully be the greatest level of public safety and law enforcement service in its history," Elique said.
Elique has been director of public safety at the 200,000-student CUNY since 1991. CUNY's public safety officers number some 800. From 1970 to 1991 he held increasingly responsible positions with the Port Authority Police of New York and New Jersey. From 1988 to 1991 he served as police inspector/operation and was responsible for managing all police operations at six commands in two states, including the World Trade Center, Port Authority Bus Terminal, and all Hudson River Crossings.
"Mr. Elique brings unique experience to UNLV," Ackerman said. "He developed the public safety initiative currently in use at the 21-campus CUNY system. His hands-on administrative style and his commitment to campus policing are impressive."
Noting that the search process worked well and attracted a number of strong candidates, Ackerman said, "The appointment of Mr. Elique is a very good thing for UNLV."
