UNLV is collaborating with three Clark County schools to deliver remedial English (ENG-A) classes to college-bound high school seniors this spring. The program, entitled "Get Ready," is designed to help students develop strategies for improving the critical reading, writing, and thinking skills necessary to succeed in college.
"This is an innovative program because it brings together the resources of both UNLV and the Clark County School District to better serve the needs of local students," said Stephen Brown, assistant professor of English and director of UNLV's composition program. "By reinforcing the students' critical reading and writing skills, we are helping to build their confidence and to ease their transition into the college classroom."
Two ENG-A courses are open to all Clark County School District seniors:
- Valley High School will host a traditional "classroom" session 3-4:15 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Jan. 23 to May 8. The registration fee for this course is $237, plus the cost of the required text. For more information, or to be added to the class list, call 895-1021.
- Green Valley High School will offer two online sections of the ENG-A course, beginning Jan. 22 and Jan 23, and lasting through the semester. Students who enroll in these sessions must have access to a computer, MS Word, and the Internet. For the first three weeks, students will meet on Wednesdays (Section 1) and Thursdays (Section 2) 2:30-4 p.m. in the school's computer labs to discuss class requirements and to review distance education issues. Subsequently, all class assignments and discussion will be delivered online. The registration fee for these sections is $25, plus the cost of the required text. For more information, or to be added to the class list, call 895-3397.
Registration and payment for the aforementioned courses will occur during the first class meeting of each section.
Through a unique partnership with UNLV's Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach, a third ENG-A course is available to seniors at Clark High School free of charge in exchange for mentoring younger students at Cashman Middle School. This class is only open to Clark High School students. For more information on this program, contact Terri Bernstein at 895-4777.
All sections of ENG-A will be taught by professors from the UNLV English department. The courses are appropriate for high school seniors who want to prepare for college and for those students who scored below 21 on the ACT or below 510 on the SAT.
The "Get Ready" program is co-sponsored by UNLV's English department, the
office of undergraduate recruitment, the division of educational outreach, and the Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach.
