WHAT: The UNLV debate team will compete against the top two debaters from the country of Japan. Policy debate is a form of speech competition in which teams of two individuals aggressively debate specific policy actions. The topics of debate will include whether or not the United States should abolish capital punishment and whether the United States should increase its constructive engagement with the nation of Iran.
WHEN: Monday, March 3, from 2:30-4:45 p.m. in Beam Hall, Room 241; and Tuesday, March 4, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Carol Harter Classroom Building Complex, Room A112
NOTE: The UNLV debate program, which was eliminated in the late 1990s because of budget cuts, was re-established this past fall thanks to a generous donation from local philanthropist Sanford I. Berman. After only one semester of competition, the team is currently ranked ahead of teams from the University of Michigan, Georgetown University, Pepperdine, Stanford, and Notre Dame.
