The UNLV Choral Ensembles and the Las Vegas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation today announced a concert event called Sing for the Cure(TM), A Proclamation of Hope to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, at Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall.
Tickets are $12 general admission, $8 for students and seniors with proceeds benefiting the local Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in its efforts to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
The performers include the University Concert Singers who have been praised by critics during recent concert tours, and the UNLV Varsity Men's Glee Club and Women's Chorus, which emphasize great music-making in an atmosphere of camaraderie with university students, alumni and community members.
Composed in 2000 for the Komen Foundation, Sing for the Cure(TM) is an original symphonic song cycle dedicated to those affected by breast cancer, especially breast cancer survivors and their family and friends. The piece will be conducted by Professor David B. Weiller, director of choral studies at UNLV, and Dr. Jocelyn K. Jensen, director of the UNLV Women's Chorus. Walt Strony, world-renowned organist and the only living organist to have been twice voted "Organist of the Year" by the American Theatre Organ Society, will accompany the performers.
"Sing for the Cure(TM) gives us an unusual opportunity to further the message of hope for all people affected by breast cancer," said Susan Strang, executive director of the Komen Las Vegas Affiliate. "Many people will be moved by the libretto, which is both poignant and humorous, as well as the rich and beautiful musical score. We are very excited to share this new way of spreading the life-saving message of early detection."
"We are thrilled to participate in this worthwhile event," Weiller said. "It is an honor and a pleasure to do what we can to assist the Komen Foundation."
Credited as a global catalyst in the fight against breast cancer, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and its powerful network of volunteers continue to lead the fight against the disease. Established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at age 36, the mission of the Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
