Spend an evening with Henry David Thoreau and listen as he shares an assortment of humorous and moving adventures at the University Forum lecture set for Nov. 6 at UNLV.
Much like the famous Hal Holbrook performance of Mark Twain, David Barto, a lecturer in UNLV's English department, will give an "in-costume and in-character" presentation of the life, times, and writings of author and philosopher Henry David Thoreau.
On Nov. 9, the University Forum lecture series will feature a slide-illustrated discussion about "The Changing Images of Mexican Americans, 1920-1950."
Vicki L. Ruiz, a professor of history and the director of the Chicano Studies Program at Arizona State University, will use a series of images to depict and explain the important cultural transformation that occurred for Mexican immigrants between 1920 and 1950.
Both lectures are set for 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by the UNLV Foundation. Additional sponsors of the Ruiz lecture include the Nevada Humanities Committee, UNLV's Women's Research Institute of Nevada, the history department, the office of diversity initiatives, the women's studies program, the ethnic studies program, and multicultural student affairs.
