"NW Coast Indian Art: Masks as Symbols of Social Structure" will be the topic of the University Forum Lecture on April 8 at UNLV.
In this slide-illustrated lecture, Harry J. Calkins, education specialist at Wolfram Research in Champaign, Ill., will examine the art, ceremony, and social significance associated with the tribal masks of the Indians of the Pacific Northwest coast.
On April 11, Janet Aikens, professor of English at the University of New Hampshire, will present "Jane Austen at the Movies, Then and Now."
During the lecture, Aikens will explore the popularity of Austen's work in cinema by focusing primarily on the film that started the phenomena: "Pride and Prejudice," starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier.
Both lectures will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by The Jerry Kalafatis Lodge Charitable Foundation and the UNLV Foundation.
