UNLV students Elias H. Dagher and Michael E. Minev have been selected to receive scholarships from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
Dagher, an electrical engineering major, and Minev, who is majoring in biological sciences, are among the 282 college students across the nation to be chosen as Goldwater Scholars for the 1997-98 academic year. The recipients, who were selected on the basis of academic merit, were chosen from a field of 1,164 candidates representing all 50 states. Minev and Dagher are the only recipients in Nevada.
Dagher, a junior from Las Vegas, is enrolled in UNLV's Honors College. Minev is a sophomore from Tallmadge, Ohio.
The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board for each recipient, up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established in 1986.
The scholarship program honoring former U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The foundation so far has awarded 2,091 scholarships worth approximately $22 million.
