The life of J.R.R. Tolkien and a classical music recital will be the focus of upcoming University Forum lectures at UNLV.
Brad Eden, head of cataloging at UNLV's Lied Library, will present "The Oxford and Birmingham of J.R.R. Tolkien" on Oct. 2. In this video-illustrated lecture, Eden, a well-known authority on Tolkien, will show locations throughout England that are linked to the author and will provide commentary on his life and influences.
The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
On Oct. 5, the Ensemble Versailles of Arizona State University will present a musical recital titled "Clearly Classical." The ensemble, which uses historical instruments to restore original clarity to musical compositions, will perform using a 1795 Viennese fortepiano replica, as well as a historical violin, flute, and cello.
The recital will be held at 2 p.m. in the Doc Rando Recital Hall located in the Beam Music Center at UNLV.
All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by UNLV's College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by The Jerry Kalafatis Lodge Charitable Foundation and the UNLV Foundation.
