Ten students from Southern Nevada recently were selected as recipients of 1997-98 Jean Nidetch Scholarships.
To be eligible, the students had to show that they have overcome adversity in order to pursue their educations. Each recipient will be awarded $2,500. The scholarships are named after Jean Nidetch, founder of Weight Watchers International and benefactor of UNLV's Jean Nidetch Women's Center.
The 1997-98 Nidetch scholars are Virginia Bradberry-Almond and Tanya Pritchett of Sunset High School; Melissa Brooks of Western High School; Lori Cowan of Boulder City High School; Dwaine Harrison of Eldorado High School; Melanie Harvey and Nora Mendoza of Valley High School; David Head of Community College High School; Adam Hill of Silverado High School; and Tiffany Niedert, a UNLV senior majoring in elementary education.
The recipients will be honored at the annual Jean Nidetch Scholarship Award Ceremony and Reception on Oct. 29 at UNLV's Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
