A statewide teleconference on future uses of the Nevada Test Site will be hosted by UNLV's Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC) and UNR's Hydrology Department on Aug. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m.
The teleconference is an opportunity for the public to learn about the Nevada Test Site, participate in a public opinion survey about the site, and give their perspective on possible future uses of the site. Participation is possible on the UNLV campus in the Classroom Building Complex B at Telemedia Services or the University of Nevada, Reno campus in the Education Building, Room 202.
This meeting will, for the first time, join members of the public in both southern and northern Nevada in participating in the Nevada Risk Assessment/ Management Program (NRAMP). The NRAMP is part of a national effort by UNLV, UNR, and DOE to develop new sources of information and approaches to risk assessment and risk management. The overall objective of the NRAMP is to evaluate risks associated with radioactive and hazardous waste remediation activities in Nevada and to increase public awareness of such risks.
The NRAMP working group is open to new members. The program is one of several opportunities available to the public for participation in the Nevada Test Site through the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies. The HRC is also collaborating with the NTS Development Corp., the Nevada Alliance for Defense, Energy and Business, and the Nevada Test Site Community Advisory Board to increase the quantity and quality of public participation in decisions affecting the future to the Nevada Test Site.
For further information on this meeting or to volunteer for participation in this or other Nevada Test Site projects, contact Bill Andrews, Harry Reid Center deputy director, at (702) 895-3382 or, in Reno, Dr. Steven Wheatcraft at (702) 784-1973.
