Victims and survivors of violence will be remembered Oct. 4 during Take Back the Night activities scheduled at UNLV.
This annual event, which is celebrated across the nation, encourages people to remember victims and survivors of violence, while promoting prevention of sexual assault and domestic violence.
The event at UNLV is free and open to the public and will be held from 5-9 p.m. at Valerie Pida Plaza, which is the area located just north of the Moyer Student Union. Activities will include a campus and community resource fair; a march through the academic mall followed by a rally and a candlelight vigil; the Clothesline Project; the UNLV Women's Choir; a victim memorial; guest speakers; a band; and an open microphone for those who wish to share their experiences.
"Take Back the Night provides an opportunity to speak out against violence, remember victims, support survivors, and celebrate recovery," said Lora Watkins, sexual assault activities coordinator for the Jean Nidetch Women's Center.
Watkins said that to help educate people about this issue, a new sensory experience and interactive exhibit titled "Journey Through Abuse," will be on display at Pida Plaza from Oct. 1-4.
